  1. An example of how managing the sleep state determines overall power draw is illustrated with the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) of an automobile. The TPMS is located in the wheel of the automobile. Due to the wheel’s rotation, the TPMS cannot easily be wired for power or communications. Making the electrical connection through the rotating axle would add too much cost . Instead, the TPMS is powered by a battery and communicates with the car wirelessly by radio. The expected lifetime of the TPMS on a single battery is 10 years, so power conservation is crucial. The battery would be quickly depleted if the TPMS system were continuously measuring the pressure. Instead, the TPMS takes advantage of the fact that tire pressure information is only needed when the car is in use. In a daily commute, this is perhaps 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening (2 of 24 hours in a day). The TPMS can sense that the car is in use through an onboard accelerometer that detects the car’s motion. While the car is moving, the TPMS takes a pressure reading once a minute. It may take the TPMS 0.1 s to take the pressure measurement, which means the system is only awake 0.1/60 of a minute, and the rest of the time, it sleeps. definitions of thought leadership
